Beyond the End is an exhibition dedicated to a research and residency program initiated in 2010 in Tierra del Fuego (Chile) by curator Camila Marambio. Over the years, she has given shape to a dialogue between artists, scientists, locals and the nature reserves of Karukinka in this program entitled Ensayos. Based on the premise that only creative collaboration can efface frontiers in the field of biocultural conservation Ensayos enacts the complex interdependence of humans, non-humans and matter with the urgency of maturing aesthetic sensibility in the face of scientific discoveries.

Considering the reserves of Karukinka as a political landscape, as well as a laboratory, artists and scientists discussed their different disciplinary methodologies and created a shared experimental tool: tuning in to hearing calls. When one hears a call of any sort, emited by someone or something, it immediately makes one responsible in the sense of having to respond, in word or in deed, to that call.* The exercise of sensitivizing oneself to the calls of the wild has lead the participants of Ensayos to venture into new ethical, performative and cognitive territories.

In Paris, the exhibition Beyond the End will reveal some of these adventures on the far side of the world. Articulated in three parts, the exhibition’s first part is an immersive installation designed by artist Christy Gast, anthropologist Laura Ogden, and Camila Marambio which attempts to recount the experience and present the findings of the multidisciplinary research group Ensayo#2 (loosely incorporated by Christy Gast, Melissa Memory, Laura Ogden, Bárbara Saavedra, Derek Córcoran, Giorgia Graells and Camila Marambio). For the past three years this group has occupied itself with the consequences of the introduction of Canadian beavers into Tierra del Fuego in the1940’s. The beavers’ uninterrupted reshaping of the landscape- contributing to widespread forest decline and reduction in key ecosystem services- and the current eradication plan motivated Ensayos#2 to begin by asking the simple question: how can we listen to the beavers so as to included them into the decision making about their own future on the island?  Since first attempting a dialogue with the beavers, Ensayo#2 has practiced numerous other approaches towards regarding beaver management which poses one of the greatest conservation challenges for the region and for Karukinka.
